Networks—in many organizations they began with a simple file server connected to several workstations. As technology and the company grew, so did the network, adding mail servers, Web servers, and application servers. Eventually, firewalls, IDS/IPS (intrusion detection system/intrusion prevention system), and antivirus/spam/spyware gateways were installed to protect the private network from the external threats, as private networks hooked into the Internet.
